The fast of the 7th and the 10th of Av

צוֹמוֹת שִׁבְעָה וַעֲשָׂרָה בְּאָב

These fasts were appointed as a reminder of the beginning and the end of the destruction of Jerusalem and the burning of the Temple in Jerusalem.

The tenth day of the month of Av is also known as נְדָבָה nedava.

The 7th, 8th and 9th days are considered as days of mourning by Karaites, at this time Karaites do not eat meat and they visit cemeteries where they mourn for deceased relatives. During the 10th of Av (nedava), after the morning service at about noon they read comforting prayers then they end the fast.

*) The word nedava means a voluntary contribution, charity; the community and also individual members of the community distribute money and meat to the poor people.
